Right from the start of planning the 2008 Democratic National Convention, the event’s official organisers set out to achieve ‘the greenest ever’ Convention.
To aid them in this aim, Camco was appointed as the event’s first carbon adviser with a specific remit to undertake a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment or carbon footprint which measured business-as-usual and actual carbon dioxide emissions associated with the event. Proactively, all the organisers involved - from the city of Denver, the Host Committee and the National Committee - implemented a comprehensive programme of ‘greening’ strategies with the intention of reducing emissions, minimising the environmental impact and looking for alternative sustainable solutions wherever possible. Due to the size and scope of this event, the assessment was a highly detailed and involved process, covering an extensive organizational and operational boundary which included evaluating the impact of local transportation, delegate travel and commuting, energy usage, waste disposal, accommodation and the collection of event venues.
In addition, our specialist team developed the functionality for two GHG emission online calculators. One was designed for the Convention’s individual travellers to Denver and the second was specifically designed for event coordinators, not only those involved in the Convention, but also those organising other Denver-specific events. Both of these convenient and permanent website tools are easy to use and offer longevity, providing a tangible way for future visitors to Denver to measure and offset their individual or group carbon footprints.
