Bath Western Riverside

Integrated sustainability in the South West

Camco are advising Crest Nicholson Regeneration on their plans for 2000 new homes at Bath Western Riverside. The scheme sets a new standard for integrated sustainability and involves one of the largest ever energy services agreements for a residential-led development.

This challenging development, on a 43 acre brownfield site in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath, will deliver much needed housing (including 25 per cent affordable housing) for the region. The riverside location, approximately one mile from the city centre, presents both challenges and opportunities for sustainable development and high quality architectural design. Crest Nicholson Regeneration and Camco worked with local stakeholders to develop a sustainability strategy that will enhance lifestyle choices for residents. In operation this strategy will be supported by an on-site sustainable lifestyle centre and a sustainability review panel will monitor performance over time.

Climate change mitigation and adaptation have been priority issues for the design and engineering of the Western Riverside and include; an energy efficient design specification which will remain above regulation standards as building regulations become more stringent during the lifetime of the construction programme; on-site energy generation equipment using natural gas and renewable energy fuel sources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a third; a comprehensive green travel plan; the use of low environmental impact materials; and an integrated flood protection, SUDS, and ecology strategy.

Camco has played an integral part in this project:
  • Developing sustainability and energy strategies
  • Advising on energy procurement services and managing the tender process
  • Acting as technical adviser for ESCO contract negotiations
