JCB and Camco announce supply chain Carbon Reduction Programme

One of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction equipment acts to mitigate risks posed by rising energy prices and carbon taxation within its supply chainIntroductionJCB has launched a ground-breaking new Carbon Reduction Programme to help reduce carbon emissions from its supply chain. The work, which will be undertaken by Camco is part of JCB’s long-term commitment to carbon reduction, running alongside initiatives to reduce their own carbon footprint, emissions from deliveries, and embodied energy of manufactured products. JCB recognises the need to respond to the threat of climate change and to manage their energy and carbon liabilities. As a socially responsible company JCB is working to minimise their impact on the environment, whilst understanding the business risks posed by rising energy prices and the introduction of carbon taxes. To fully mitigate these risks, including those residing in the supply chain, JCB has asked Camco to undertake a programme engaging 250 key suppliers. Programme A successful pilot project of six suppliers identified annual savings of over £250,000 and 1,500 tCO2. During the initial phase suppliers will be asked to submit energy and carbon data. Camco will assess the carbon intensity of each supplier and then help identify options for implementing practical and management actions to deliver carbon reduction. This process will be repeated each year, allowing JCB to monitor progress and target further support where it is most needed. Over the next two years, all of JCB’s major suppliers will be given support and guidance to help them reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions. A range of support mechanisms are available for JCB suppliers to take advantage of, and participating companies will agree a preferred course of action with Camco. JCB’s Director of Purchasing, Onkar Sunar commented on the new project: “This is a challenging programme, offering a wide range of support services to a global supply chain which includes small local firms to major multinationals. Initial responses from suppliers have been encouraging, and success is expected because of the underlying business case for reducing energy consumption and mitigating the risks of rising energy prices and the introduction of carbon taxes.” “Camco has supported JCB over the past four years to embed carbon management in its operational delivery. We are delighted to support JCB in moving to the next level by driving carbon management through its supply chain,” said Robert Clark, Associate Director at Camco. Notes for Editors JCB The phenomenal global success story of JCB started in Staffordshire from humble beginnings. The business was founded on October 23rd 1945, when the late Joseph Cyril Bamford, CBE - known universally as Mr. JCB - made his first product in a rented lock-up garage in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, England. Using a £1 welding set and wartime scrap, he produced a screw-tipping trailer, which he sold at the town’s market for £45. He used the money to buy more materials …..and so a great engineering enterprise was born. JCB is the world’s third largest construction equipment manufacturer by volume and has 18 plants on four continents: 11 in the UK, three in India and others in the USA, Germany, Brazil and China. There are also subsidiary companies in France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Singapore. The company’s Worldwide Headquarters are in Rocester, Staffordshire, which are thoughtfully landscaped in 175 acres of countryside with three lakes, wildlife and sculptures. The company employs around 9,000 people globally. The company manufactures 300 different machines in 12 product ranges: backhoe loaders; telescopic handlers; tracked and wheeled excavators; wheeled loading shovels; articulated dump trucks; rough terrain fork lifts; mini excavators and Robot skid steers loaders and Robot tracked skid steer loaders. In addition, for agricultural markets, the company produces a range of telescopic handlers and the unique Fastrac tractor. JCB also manufactures the Teletruk forklift for the industrial sector.
