Arla Foods UK plc is the country’s largest supplier of fresh milk and cream to the top seven retailers as well as the market leader of the butter, spreads and margarine sector. It is also a major supplier of other added value products including flavoured milk, cheese and yogurt. UK employees total approximately 3,000 nationwide.Camco was selected as the lead energy and resource management company to work with Arla to deliver a Carbon Management Programme. The focus was on energy reduction through effective energy management and the implementation of technical solutions. Our team of energy specialists performed detailed energy scoping audits across Arla's nine UK processing sites. Camco identified potential carbon savings of over 10,000 tonnes a year with a total cost saving potential of over £2M. Camco’s software solution, Energy Desktop was introduction to provide effective monitoring & targeting, manage the improvement process and report on the success of the project.Using Energy Desktop, Camco’s team of energy specialists were able to work with Arla colleagues to identify improvement initiatives by benchmarking and reviewing best practice. Typical projects identified have resulted in efficiency improvements in steam generation, refrigeration, compressed air and processing operations. Energy Desktop has also been used to identify significant water and effluent reductions.Camco continue to work with Arla and help reduce carbon emissions:As Europe’s third largest dairy company, we are an industry leader and the reduction of our carbon emissions in order to maximise efficiency, minimise waste and reduce our environmental impact remains central to our strategy. By 2020, we have a global aim to reduce our direct and indirect emissions of gases impacting on the climate by 25 per cent. The implementation of Camco’s Energy Desktop software at each of our UK sites has been critical to our understanding of our energy usage patterns, which has led to sustainable reductions in both carbon emissions and production costs. To date, Camco’s expertise has enabled Arla Foods UK plc to realise annual savings of over £1M GBP and we are on target to reduce our overall carbon emissions in the UK by over 10,000 tonnes annually.
